Eye MD

What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?

An ophthalmologist obtains an undergraduate degree than completes a four year medical school obtaining a doctor of medicine (MD) degree.  They then complete an internship year and a three year ophthalmology residency.  Some may subspecialize in an area of ophthalmology by completing a fellowship.

An optometrist completes prerequisite undergraduate courses but most optometry schools do not require an undergraduate degree.  They then complete a four-year optometry degree (OD). Most also complete a one year residency for special certification. Optometrists diagnose eye ailments and prescribe glasses, contacts and eye-related medication.

Our ophthalmologists can give you complete eye care services including accurate diagnosis of eye conditions, medication treatments, surgery and laser-assisted surgery in addition to your basic prescription of glasses and contacts.
